Description[]

A Hell House is a house which has been built on the site of something where extreme negative spiritual and emotional energies have caused the house to take on a life of its own. Such places may include a graveyard, a battlefield, or the previous site of a different haunted house.

Anywhere a house can be built, as long as it is on top of something like what is described
above.

Modus Operandi[]

Hell Houses lay dormant until either someone enters the house or a new family moves in. At this point in time, the house has no power and must build it up. It does this by using a Fair-powered Hallucination on anyone who enters a certain key part of the house alone. If it is enough to cause the person to be afraid, it feeds on that fear, gaining the ability to use all of its powers at Poor rank for one month. At the end of this month, if it has been able to Feed on fear ten times, it gains the ability to use all its powers at Fair rank for an additional month. From this point on, whenever it feeds on fear ten times it gains one more rank for one more month. When it becomes powerful enough, it will begin to kill everyone it can using whatever methods it can, especially by Enthralling someone to do it.

Neutralization[]

In many cases, a Hell House is simply abandoned and thus allowed to weaken until someone else comes along. They may be destroyed by fire, but only if that fire is set in the house’s “heart.” The heart of a house is often either the furnace, the basement, or a room that the house holds as significant (such as the room in which a murder took place in hundreds of years ago).

Story Seed[]

A family moves into the old house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY. It isn’t very long before they realize why it’s called the Amityville Horror.
